Introduced in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers and differed from the older Rolex chronographs by having the tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel for greater dial legibility. It allowed drivers using the chronograph to measure the average speed over a given distance based on elapsed time and has since become an icon and has adorned the wrists of many famous people since, including the man who has become synonymous with the Daytona, Paul Newman. This version the reference 116509 was produced with the unusual Racing Dial details.
The case is made of solid 18ct white gold and fitted with a fixed, engraved Tachymeter Units per hour bezel. The dial is clean and black with applied white gold Arabic numerals and features the unique red chronograph split-second and sub-dial hands, as well as red accents on the sub-dials themselves. Fitted with a Twinlock screw-down crown and matching screw-down pushers to allow the watch to be worn up to 100M underwater too.
